Who we are
Yorkshire Bank is a trading name of Clydesdale Bank PLC, a member of the National Australia Bank Group, and combines global strength with the local service of a well established regional bank. The Bank offers a range of services for personal and business customers, combining qualities developed in over 140 years of service with a modern approach to financial services. It recognises that customers are evermore discerning and require value from their relationship with Yorkshire Bank through its ever-widening range of products and services.
Yorkshire Bank was founded in 1859 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, by Colonel Edward Akroyd as a philanthropic organisation aimed at providing a means of saving for the working classes. During the late 19th century the Bank became known as Yorkshire Penny Bank and by 1866 the number of branches reached their peak at 955 and, in 1874, the first school banks were launched. Yorkshire Bank developed into one of the most profitable regional banks in the UK and, since 1990, we have been a member of the National Australia Bank, an international financial services group which at September 2007 had assets of more than £265 billion, 8 million banking customers and more than 2.3 million wealth management clients.
Today, Yorkshire Bank is the principal English arm of the National Australia Bank Group's UK operations. With its head office based in Leeds, the Bank has a network of over 190 retail branches which stretches from Newcastle in the north to London in the south, Hereford in the west to Peterborough in the east.
The Bank's network is now aligned to individual customers. This now matches skills and services with customer needs through dedicated branch networks, staff and product portfolios. In support of this re-alignment, the Workplace Initiative was launched to develop a consistent brand image within branches through signage, merchandising and interior design.
Yorkshire Bank was re-accredited with the prestigious Investors in People in 2005, a status now enjoyed by the whole of the Group's UK operations, reflecting the value the Bank places on training and developing its people. In addition, Yorkshire Bank was voted "Best Regional Lender" 2006 by Your Mortgage Magazine, an award which we have won for the past eight years.
Yorkshire Bank's innovative Financial Solutions Centres (FSCs) were launched across the UK in 2005, offering customers a highly integrated business and private banking service.
